Tell me a few things about the island!

Kefalonia is the largest island of the Ionian Sea and it is set in the middle of the Seven Islands . As many wrote in the past, Kefalonia is a land blessed with natural beauty that still remains untouched. It is one of the islands that has escaped from speedy development and has a slow relaxed pace of life.

There are approximately 33,500 inhabitans that live on the island on a permanent basis and during the summer months the visitors come over to enjoy the hot, sunny climate and the clear skies.

Kefalonia has a number of stunning features including contrasting landscapes, beaches, geological phenomena but also rich history and local culture.

Some of the mountains offer b eautiful walks to monasteries with amazing views. Myrtos is the best example were sheer cliffs drop to a breathtaking beach of small pale pebbles and a unique blue sea. Meantime, Antisamos is a magical beach with crystal clear water surrounded by deep green mountains.

Drogorati Cave is a cave of stalactites and stalagmites and Melissani is a lake-cave, both experiences not to miss. Fiscardo and Assos take you back in time as they are places that have not been affected by the severe earthquake in 1953.

Driving around the island you will see castles and archaelogical sights that indicate the timeline of civilization in Kefalonia. Moreover, in Argostoli and Lixouri you can see the archaeological museums. The Kefalonians have a great history and tradition which they ensure that new generations take over it. That is why you will always see any age group participating in the local dancing, music or theatrical groups. Cultural and religious events take place in specific days of the year, however, theatrical, musical or athletic happenings are usually advertised.

In Kefalonia you will realise that most of the people can speak some English. Even if they don't you are assured of a warm and hearty welcome since language is not barrier to Kefalonian hospitality. On the whole, the Kefalonian people are extremely hospitable and welcoming. It is appreciated, however, if you learn at least a few words of Greek with which to greet your neighbours.

If you see people shouting to eachother, they are not necessarily arguing. It could just be a regular conversation with some excitement! This composes the Kefalonian mentality which is a local charm!

Kefalonia is also proud for its local traditional products. These include a large variety of sweets and foods, thyme honey, the famous ROBOLA wine and cheese products. Some of the locals even produce these on their own at home.

There is a lot more about Kefalonia than the above.

What sort of lifestyle should I expect from living in Kefalonia?

The main benefit from moving to Kefalonia is that you can have a relaxed way of life. Here you escape from any routine and enjoy resting. And if you feel that this is too boring for you, having a garden and growing your own vegetables and fruit can keep you a bit busy.

Either way you can have a healthy diet consisting of fresh fish, fruit vegetables, olive oil and wine. The conclusion is that living in Kefalonia you can improve the quality of your life at good value for money.

What is the weather like?

Kefalonia has a glorious summer sunshine and warm temperatures. The winter time is mild and it rains sometimes, however, the temperature does not fall too low.

What are the entertainment activities on the island?

During the summer as a tourist you can see a lot going on around the island. In the winter time you can still go out for your entertainment but on a more local style . You will realise the authentic Greek culture behind everything and you will not be treated as if you were a tourist. Picturesque taverns and coffee shops are open all year around and some of them also organise events with live traditional music. The cinema in Argostoli, is also open and shows most of the films released.

What about shopping?

Kefalonia offers a large number of shops, although the majority are situated in Argostoli, the capital. Roughly speaking you can find anything here at retail enterprises which are mainly family run. International outlets, department stores or hypermarkets have not made their presence yet.

Supermarkets are open daily until 20:00, on Saturdays until 18:00 and on Sundays closed. Shops are usually open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 2:pm, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30am to 2:00pm and from 6 to 9 pm.

What about newspapers and magazines?

Many foreign newspapers and magazines are available in the kiosks although outside the summer season they are usually available in specific news agencies.

What about television?

There are about 10 terrestrial TV channels, but if you want you can install satelitte TV. Satelite TV reception is good in Greece and is easy to get installed in your home. This way you will be able to watch a great number of TV chanels
